Affective factors refer to personality factors which deal with affective domain, self-esteem, inhibition, risk-taking, and so on (Brown, 1987). One of the major obstacles learners have to overcome in learning to speak is the affective factors (Brown, 1994). As it is stated that one of affective factors is self-esteem, it is assumed that self-esteem plays an important role in learning English and affects the students’ achievement, especially speaking achievement.
This study is intended to discover the students’ level of self-esteem, their speaking achievement, and the relationship between students’ self-esteem and their speaking achievement. For these purposes, descriptive method by using ex post facto design is used. The subject of this study involves the fifth semester students of English Education Department of UPI. Data for the two variables investigated are gained from two instruments. They are self-esteem questionnaire and the documentation of Students’ Academic Record (Kartu Hasil Studi). The data are correlated by using Pearson Product Moment statistical analysis through the available of SPSS 11.0 version (Statistical Product and Service Solution)
This study shows that all of students have high self-esteem and the majority of them are categorized into very good level in speaking achievement. This result is in line with Shrauger (1972) and Buss (1995) who stated that some characteristics of people with high level of self-esteem are having high standard in their achievement, goals, and their own performance. Finally, the correlation coefficient shows that the relationship between students’ self-esteem and their speaking achievement is classified in low correlation, but this study agrees with previous research that self-esteem correlates positively with speaking achievement.
